The PRISM showcase will feature outstanding faculty and student chamber groups, as well as faculty-student collaborations in a prism concert setting. A prism concert is an interactive concert in which the different participating groups rotate sets throughout the night, allowing the audience to encounter each group on several different occasions/moods throughout the evening. This event is free and open to the public.
Faculty artist and conductor Amy Kotsonis will coordinate this interactive event, featuring women’s chorus ensembles from Iowa high schools, as well as UNI’s own Women’s Chorus. The event will culminate in an evening concert at 6:30 p.m. The concert is free and open to the public, but the festival does require registration. School of Music faculty artist Julia Bullard will present a viola recital with collaborators and repertoire to be announced. This event is free and open to the public.
Nieson is the author of the memoir, Schoolhouse: Lessons on Love & Landscape (Ice Cube Press). He serves on the MFA faculty at Chatham University.
Open mic signup at 7:00. Bring your best five minutes of poetry, fiction or creative nonfiction to share (singer/songwriters are also welcome). The open mic starts at 7:15 and the featured author takes the stage at 8:00. A Q&A will follow each reading. Books by regional writers will be available for purchase. The Final Thursday Reading Series is a collaboration of Final Thursday Press, the Hearst Center for the Arts, and the University of Northern Iowa College of Humanities, Arts and Sciences. Coffee is provided by Sidecar Coffee Roasters and cream is provided by Hansen's Farm Fresh Dairy.
School of Music faculty artist Bob Washut will appear with UNI jazz faculty artists, alumni and guests, to present his final concert at UNI before retirement. The concert will also serve as official CD release for his newest album, and a portion of the proceeds from ticket and CD sales at the concert will go to the newly established UNI Jazz Scholarship fund. The New Horizons Band will offer its spring concert. Under the direction of Diana Blake, the New Horizons Band features musicians 55 and older who travel from all over Iowa. This event is free and open to the public.
