This presentation seeks to make visible some of the objects in the UNI Permanent Art Collection made by women artists and elevate contributions of women as makers. Note, the Gallery will be closed Mon., Jan. 15 for the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. Free and open to the public.

An exhibition by Mary Griep, retired Associate Dean of Fine Arts at St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN representing nearly two decades of work inspired by 11th and 12th century sacred architecture from around the world. Among the large-scale artworks on display are Notre Dame Cathedral of Chartres (France), the Hindu temple of Angkor Wat (Cambodia), the Mayan temple El Castillo (Mexico), and the artist’s newest work, the Baptistery of Saint John, in Florence (Italy). On Wed., Jan. 17 at 6:00 p.m., Griep will present a lecture about her work in Kamerick Art Building, room 111. An opening reception will follow.

Private Tolkatchev at the Gates of Hell: Majdanek and Auschwitz Liberated: Testimony of an Artist

To commemorate International Holocaust Remembrance Day 2018, the UNI Center for Holocaust and Genocide Education presents an exhibit of reproductions of the drawings made by Zinovii Tolkatchev, a Soviet artist who accompanied the Red Army forces that liberated the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp on January 27, 1945. The exhibit also includes reproductions of a few drawings he made at the Russian-liberated Majdanek concentration camp outside of Lublin, Poland. Biographical information and excerpts from Tolkatchev's testimony complete the exhibit. All material comes a virtual exhibit created by Yad Vashem, the World Holocaust Remembrance Center, in Jerusalem.

Final Thursday Reading Series featuring Timothy Fay

Fay is the publisher and editor of the Wapsipinicon Almanac, an annual collection of essays, fiction and reviews produced in Anamosa, IA since 1988.

Open mic signup at 7:00.  Bring your best five minutes of poetry, fiction or creative nonfiction to share (singer/songwriters are also welcome). The open mic starts at 7:15 and the featured author takes the stage at 8:00. A Q&A will follow each reading. Books by regional writers will be available for purchase. The Final Thursday Reading Series is a collaboration of Final Thursday Press, the Hearst Center for the Arts, and the University of Northern Iowa College of Humanities, Arts and Sciences. Coffee is provided by Sidecar Coffee Roasters and cream is provided by Hansen's Farm Fresh Dairy.

Bob Ryan is a retired sports writer for the Boston Globe and a regular contributor for ESPN’s “Around the Horn.” He has been referred to as “the quintessential American sportswriter” and a guru of basketball. He retired from the Globe in 2012 after the winter Olympics but continued to report and appear on ESPN and elsewhere and has his own podcast, Bob Ryan’s Boston Podcast.” The lecture is open to the public, free of charge.

Guest Recital: Peter Steiner, trombone

Visiting artist Peter Steiner will present a trombone recital. Steiner currently serves as trombonist for the Vienna State Opera and Vienna Philharmonic. Prior to that engagement, he served as Principal Trombonist with the Colorado Symphony for the 2014-2015 season. He has performed as guest principal trombonist with the Munich Philharmonic, Staatskapelle Dresden, New York Philharmonic, Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Seattle Symphony Orchestra and BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. This event is free and open to the public.
