Located in the Mary Haskell-Hansen Room of the Gallery, this UNI Permanent Art Collection exhibition was co-curated by Dr. Adelman and Gallery Director Darrell Taylor. Iseminger of Chicago;  "Flower" by the late Ralph Haskell, professor emeritus of the UNI Department of Art; "Inspiration" by Käthe Kollwitz, which was donated by Kurt and Cynthia Kruse of Cedar Falls; "Seated Model with Mirror" by Steven Bigler of St. Paul, which was donated by the artist himself; and an untitled still-life by Jean Lurçat, which was donated by Ray and Sandy Benter of Des Moines. Also, on view will be a newly conserved 18th century portrait in an antique gilded frame donated by Dr. Hart M. Nelsen and Dr. Anne Kusener Nelsen of Seattle. "Jack Balas: Against the Grain – Men, Maps, and Other Incorrections"

"Jack Balas: Against the Grain – Men, Maps, and Other Incorrections"

Monday, August 19, 2019 (All day) to Saturday, October 5, 2019 (All day)

The artist will present a lecture titled "Bro-sure: A Brief Look at the Art of Jack Balas" on Wednesday, August 28, at 7 p.m. in KAB 111. An opening reception will follow.  Balas is a Colorado-based artist specializing in figurative paintings and drawings in oil and watercolor. For the last 15 years, he has focused on depictions of the male figure, presenting them in a variety of personal and societal scenarios that project them far beyond the traditional role of portraiture. Employing painted language in the form of titles, phrases, and paragraph-stories, the works take on the strategies of annotated documents, maps and calendars, and yet by their very depiction the men found in them also take on the politics of visibility – queer visibility and male visibility in general. All events are free and open to the public.
