Continuing and Distance Education will host the 4th Annual Distance Education Conference, highlighting a variety of free and low-cost educational materials available to enhance teaching and learning, including open educational resources (OER). New this year will be a digital showcase of exemplary online courses as well as breakout sessions led by UNI faculty and staff. Keynote speaker is Leslie Kennedy, Ed.D., Director, Affordable Learning Solutions, Academic Technology Services, The California State University.
School of Music faculty artists Matthew Andreini and Randall Harlow will collaborate to present a percussion and organ recital featuring additional percussionists from throughout Iowa. The recital will feature works for organ, percussion and electronics by William Bolcom and Jacob TV, as well as Lou Harrison's monumental Concert for Organ and Percussion Orchestra with ten percussionists playing a variety of unique, hand-made instruments. This event is free and open to the public.
Dr. Henry Segerman will present "How to Make Sculptures of 4-Dimensional Things." Segerman is an assistant professor in the Department of Mathematics at Oklahoma State University. He is both a mathematician, working mostly in 3-dimensional geometry and topology, and a mathematical artist, working mostly in the medium of 3D printing. The lecture is intended for general audiences, on topics of current interest in mathematics and mathematics education and is free of charge.
Steven Johnson will speak as part of the Meryl Norton Hearst Lecture Series. Johnson is a best-selling author of works including Everything Bad Is Good For You: How Today’s Popular Culture Is Actually Making Us Smarter and Future Perfect: The Case for Progress in a Networked Age. In Fall 2014, he will star in the new PBS Series, How We Got To Now with Steven Johnson.
"Necessary Targets" is a play set in the aftermath of the Bosnian conflict. In the play, two American women, a therapist and a writer, visit a Bosnian refugee camp to help women survivors cope with the trauma of sexual violence and genocide. The play raises questions about the ownership of these stories as well as the ethics of telling and documenting them. A brief discussion will follow the reading. The play contains descriptions of violence and sexual assualt. This material may be triggering to some people. Be advised that some material is inappropriate for children.

Join MSW candidates/U.S. Army Veterans Ron Devoll and Tim Tolliver for a discussion about what the term "trauma informed" means and how you can use it to benefit your students. Students may come to school with trauma in their background, whether it is from family situations, natural disasters, crime, military service, etc. These experiences can be triggered depending on content or conversations in the classroom. This session discusses how to work with students from a trauma background and seeks to change the paradigm from "What's wrong with you?" to "What happened to you?"
GeoCache is an event that will be held during Money Smart Week at Maucker Union providing UNI students the opportunity to answer financial literacy questions using their cellphone and competing state-wide for a $1,000 scholarship and campus-wide for an additional $1,000 scholarship.
Can a simple 19th century technology change the world? For most North Americans, a bicycle ride or commute is a lifestyle choice. For countless others across the globe, each pedal stroke is progress out of poverty, toward an education and over the mountains of social and cultural discrimination.
"With My Own Two Wheels" profiles the lives of five people and portrays the powerful difference a bicycle has made for each of them and their communities. The film can be used to better understand their life circumstances, the power of an "appropriate" human-scale technology in an increasingly hi-tech world and to inspire discussion on how we can each contribute to improving the lives of people around the world, even in simple ways.
Cartoonist Lela Lee will be presenting and discussing her cartoon “Angry Little Asian Girl,” and her books Angry Little Girls. Characters experience and express anger in various ways. The strips are often both humorous and thought-provoking. Come listen to how Lela Lee overcame the odds, as many told her “there is just no market for Asians” and her characters. She not only beat this insulting stereotype, but has published several books, comics, and has her own website. This is the 20th anniversary of Angry Little Asian Girls.

Receipient of the Women's and Gender Studies Outstanding Graduate Paper on Gender award will present their paper and be presented with their award.
National Volunteer Week is a national week of volunteering. The Service and Leadership Council will be hosting a variety of events for students to get involved in their community. There will be events held all week for students interested.
